Do you drive electric and want to charge smartly while lowering your energy costs? Then check out our smart charging solutions for home.

What is an energy scan?
An energy scan is a free analysis of energy consumption in homes and business premises, performed by certified energy consultants. The goal of this scan is to identify energy waste and pinpoint concrete savings opportunities that can be implemented immediately.
The energy scan is conducted via video calls and on-site visits, depending on the specific situation and the provider. During the call or visit, our energy advisor systematically examines all aspects of energy consumption, from heating and insulation to lighting, appliances, and electrical equipment. By identifying both appliances and equipment, savings opportunities are identified and unnecessary energy consumption can be prevented.
The result is a personalized advisory report with concrete savings tips and a cost estimate. This report contains not only recommendations for energy-saving measures, but also information regarding payback periods and potential subsidies. The advice and solutions are tailored to the client's specific situation, fully aligned with their unique circumstances. The advisor provides practical tips that you can apply immediately, as well as advice on larger investments such as solar panels or insulation.
A professional energy scan goes beyond simply reviewing energy bills. The consultant analyzes the building's entire energy system, taking into account usage patterns, climatic conditions, and the specific characteristics of the building.
Benefits of an energy scan
Research from 2025 shows that households and businesses can save an average of 10-30% on their energy costs after implementing recommendations from an energy scan. These savings result from a combination of immediate measures and strategic investments.
The service is offered by J&S Energy, energy companies, municipalities, and specialized agencies. These providers invest in energy scans because they contribute to their sustainability goals and customer satisfaction.
Immediately applicable tips for heating, insulation, and lighting are a key component of any energy assessment. Many of these tips cost little or nothing to implement, yet deliver immediate savings. Think of adjusting thermostat settings, sealing gaps, or replacing old lighting.
The energy scan also provides insight into potential subsidies and financing options for energy measures. Advisors are aware of current subsidy programs and can assist with applying for them. The energy scan and the advice provided help identify energy savings and implement sustainable solutions. This can significantly shorten the payback period of investments.

For companies: Business energy scan
Municipal programs, such as those in Utrecht and Amsterdam, offer comprehensive free energy scans for entrepreneurs, including a year of guidance. Energy scans are not only relevant for businesses but also for other types of organizations, such as social organizations, because they help improve energy consumption and comply with legal requirements within the organization. These programs were created to help local businesses become more sustainable and reduce energy costs.
The business energy scan includes a much more extensive analysis of commercial properties, installations, and energy systems than a scan for private individuals. This examines not only basic aspects but also more complex systems such as ventilation, industrial processes, and large consumers.
Participation requirements typically include that the business premises are located within the municipal boundaries and that you own or rent the property. Some programs impose additional requirements, such as minimum energy consumption or specific business sectors.
Comparison of municipal programs
| Township | Workshop Leading | Maximum size | Waiting time |
|---|---|---|---|
| Utrecht | 1 years | No limit | 2-3 weeks |
| Amsterdam | 6 months | < 250 employees | 1-2 weeks |
| Rotterdam | 1 years | < 100 employees | 3-4 weeks |
| The Hague | 9 months | SME companies | 2 weeks |
The business scanning process
Step 1: Registration and intake within 5 working days. After registration, you will be contacted within five working days for a comprehensive intake. During this meeting, the specific characteristics of your company and energy consumption will be discussed to optimally prepare for the scan.
Step 2: On-site inspection by Klimaatroute or a similar agency. An experienced energy consultant visits your business premises for a thorough analysis. This visit typically lasts 2-4 hours, depending on the size and complexity of the building.
Step 3: Analysis of the thermal envelope, heating/cooling, lighting, controls, and sustainable generation. The consultant systematically examines all energy-related systems. Advanced measuring equipment and thermal cameras are used to detect hidden energy leaks.
Step 4: Report with investment advice and payback periods within 2 weeks. The comprehensive report contains not only the findings but also a prioritized list of measures with estimated costs and payback periods. This report forms the basis for further decision-making.
Step 5: Assistance with requesting quotations and subsidy applications. The advisor helps find suitable suppliers and apply for available subsidies. This guidance can significantly facilitate and accelerate the implementation. As a result, it becomes easier to actually introduce and implement the identified solutions in the business premises.
The energy scan process step by step
Good preparation is essential for an effective energy scan. Gather energy bills from the past three years and technical documentation for installations such as central heating boilers, heat pumps, and solar panels. It's recommended to have the energy scan conducted by a professional, especially for renovations or when legal obligations apply. This information helps the advisor identify patterns and make targeted recommendations.

During the inspection, the consultant uses advanced equipment such as thermal cameras, light meters, and other measuring instruments. These tools reveal energy leaks that are invisible to the naked eye, such as thermal bridges in insulation or inefficient lighting.
The analysis of user behavior and energy consumption patterns is a crucial part of any thorough energy assessment. The consultant considers not only the technical aspects but also how the building is used and where optimizations can be made in daily operation.
The report prioritizes measures based on return on investment, clearly explaining both costs and savings. The report is written in plain language, so even people without a technical background can understand and implement the recommendations.
Specific examples of aspects examined include thermal imaging of the exterior facade, measurements of light levels in various rooms, and analysis of the heating system. The consultant documents all findings with photos and measurements to provide a complete picture.
Providers of free energy scans in the Netherlands
Energy suppliers like Vattenfall, Eneco, and Essent offer free scans to their customers as part of their customer service. These scans are often easily accessible and can be quickly scheduled through online portals or by phone.
Municipal programs are available in Utrecht, Amsterdam, Rotterdam, and more than 50 other municipalities. These programs often offer more comprehensive support and are specifically aimed at local businesses and residents.
Independent agencies such as Energy-Check, Klimaatroute, and local energy advisors offer specialized services. These agencies often have years of experience and can provide objective advice without any commercial interests tied to specific suppliers.
Overview of conditions per provider
| Provider | Terms & conditions | Duration scan | Follow up |
|---|---|---|---|
| Vattenfall | To be a customer | 45 minutes | Email summary |
| Gemeente Utrecht | Company in Utrecht | 2-3 hours | 1 year of guidance |
| Energy Check | None | 1-2 hours | Optional |

Contact information and registration links for the major providers are available on their websites. Many providers also offer a form where you can schedule an appointment directly or request more information.
Follow-up guidance and monitoring
After the scan, you'll gain access to the EnergyPlanner dashboard, where you'll have 24/7, practical insights into your energy consumption and savings. This gives you immediate insight into the effectiveness of implemented measures and further optimization opportunities.

Quarterly evaluation meetings with energy consultants are part of many programs. These meetings help adjust measures and identify new energy-saving opportunities.
Guidance in implementing recommended measures can make the difference between a report being shelved and actual energy savings. Consultants can help you find reliable suppliers and compare different options.
Assistance with subsidy applications and comparing contractor quotes is often offered free of charge. This service can result in significant savings by taking advantage of available subsidy programs and obtaining the best prices.
Tips for continuous energy monitoring after the scan include using smart meters, tracking consumption figures, and periodically evaluating energy performance. These habits help maintain achieved savings and identify new opportunities.
Legal obligations and energy labels
Companies are subject to an energy saving reporting obligation starting from 50.000 kWh per year. This obligation entails that companies must demonstrate what measures they are taking to reduce their energy consumption. During an energy scan, the largest consumers of electricity and gas are specifically examined, so that companies gain insight into ways to lower their energy costs. An energy scan can assist in this by documenting actions taken and planned.
The energy label C requirement for office buildings will take effect in 2023. Buildings with a lower energy label will no longer be permitted for rent, which has direct consequences for commercial property owners. An energy scan helps identify measures to meet this requirement.
An energy scan plays a crucial role in meeting legal requirements by providing a systematic approach to energy conservation. The report can serve as evidence of compliance and as a guide for necessary improvements.
Preventing fines and restrictions for commercial properties is a major driver for having an energy scan performed. By acting proactively, companies can avoid costly sanctions and operational restrictions.
Relevant legislation and regulations
| Regulation | Implementation date | Target audience | Penalties |
|---|---|---|---|
| Energy label C | 2023 | Offices >100m² | Rental ban |
| Information obligation | 2023 | Companies >50.000 kWh | Fine up to €870.000 |
| EU taxonomy | 2024 | Big companies | Reporting obligation |
Register for an energy scan
For optimal preparation, a checklist containing energy bills from the past three years, floor plans of the property, and information about usage patterns is helpful. This documentation helps the consultant gain a complete picture and make targeted recommendations.
The step-by-step registration process varies by provider, but usually takes place through their website or by phone. Many providers offer online forms where you can schedule an appointment directly and provide preliminary information.
Expectations regarding turnaround time vary from application to receipt of the report. For individuals, this process typically takes 1-2 weeks, while business scans can take 3-4 weeks due to the more extensive analysis required.
Tips for getting the most out of the energy scan include asking specific questions about your situation, preparing technical documentation, and actively participating during the meeting or visit.

EIA RVO: how the Energy Investment Allowance works for your business
If you, as an entrepreneur, invest in energy-saving business assets or sustainable energy technologies, chances are you have heard of the EIA RVO. This Energy Investment Allowance is a tax scheme from the Netherlands Enterprise Agency (RVO) that provides you with a tax benefit for investments that lower your energy consumption or reduce CO2 emissions. In this article, we explain exactly how the scheme works, what steps you need to take, and what the key considerations are.
What exactly is the EIA?
The Energy Investment Deduction is a tax deduction that allows you to deduct a portion of your investment in energy-efficient business assets from your taxable profit. This means you pay less corporate tax or income tax. It is not a direct subsidy, but a tax benefit that you can utilize in your annual tax return.
The scheme is specifically intended to encourage companies to invest in technologies that contribute to energy conservation and sustainability. Examples include solar panels, heat pumps, and energy-efficient motors, but also commercial battery storage that helps absorb peaks in electricity consumption.
Which business assets are eligible?
Not every energy-saving investment automatically qualifies for the EIA. The Netherlands Enterprise Agency (RVO) manages a special Energy List containing all approved assets. This list is updated annually and contains hundreds of categories with specific descriptions and codes.
The list is divided into various categories, for example:
- Solar energy and wind energy
- Heat recovery and heat pumps
- Energy-efficient lighting
- Electrical storage systems
- Efficient climate control
- Smart energy management systems
It is important that your investment meets the exact description under a specific code on the Energy List. Sometimes there are technical requirements, minimum capacities, or other specifications that the asset must meet. Always check this in advance, because you may no longer claim a deduction afterwards if it is not on the list.
How do you apply for the EIA via RVO?
The EIA application process involves a number of clear steps. The process starts at RVO and ultimately ends with the Tax and Customs Administration.
Step 1: Submit application to RVO
After you have made the investment, you must submit an application to RVO within three months of commissioning. This can be done digitally via the RVO eLoket portal. You need eHerkenning for this. In the application, you indicate which asset you have purchased, under which Energy List code it falls, and what the investment cost.
Step 2: Decision from RVO
RVO assesses your application and sends a decision within a few weeks. This decision states the amount you may deduct. Please note: this is not the full investment amount, but a percentage thereof. [PLACEHOLDER: look up current deduction percentage for the relevant year]
If RVO rejects your application, you can lodge an objection against this. You must also do this with RVO within six weeks of the decision.
Step 3: Process in your tax return
As soon as you have received the positive decision, you can include the amount in your annual corporate income tax or personal income tax return. The Tax and Customs Administration will then process the deduction, and you will pay less tax on your profit. It is therefore the Netherlands Enterprise Agency (RVO) that determines whether you are eligible, but the Tax and Customs Administration that ultimately applies it.
Practical example: battery storage and charging infrastructure
For companies working on sustainability and energy management, battery storage systems are often an attractive investment. They help avoid costly peak moments in power consumption – a strategy known as peak shaving . By storing excess energy and using it later, you not only save on energy costs but also contribute to reducing pressure on the electricity grid.
Many of these storage systems are on the Energy List and are therefore eligible for the EIA. The same often applies to advanced charging infrastructure for electric vehicles, especially if it is linked to smart energy management systems that ensure charging takes place at the most opportune time.
Common mistakes and points to consider
Although the EIA is an attractive scheme, there are a number of pitfalls to watch out for:
Applying too late
The deadline of three months after commissioning is strict. If you miss this period, you will no longer be entitled to the deduction. Therefore, ensure that you initiate the application immediately after installation and delivery.
Incorrect code on the Energy List
Entrepreneurs sometimes believe that their investment falls under a specific code, while upon closer inspection this is incorrect. Carefully check the technical specifications and, if necessary, consult your supplier or a tax advisor.
No proof of investment
RVO may request invoices and technical documentation. Always keep these safe, including specifications of the asset and the date of commissioning.
Combination with other schemes
In some cases, you can combine the EIA with other tax schemes, such as the Small-Scale Investment Deduction (KIA) or depreciation. In other cases, however, they are mutually exclusive. Seek proper advice on this matter to achieve the maximum tax benefit.
Is the EIA worthwhile?
For most entrepreneurs, the answer is yes. The tax benefit can amount to a substantial sum, especially for larger investments. The administrative burden is relatively limited, certainly if you have the right documents in order.
Moreover, the EIA often fits well within a broader sustainability strategy. Companies that invest in energy conservation do so not only for the tax benefit, but also to structurally reduce energy costs, become less dependent on the grid, and become more future-proof. A good example of this is the use of container battery storage for larger business parks or production sites.
Need help with the application?
Many entrepreneurs can handle the EIA application independently, but it can be wise to seek assistance. This is especially true if you are planning a complex installation or if you are unsure whether your investment is listed on the Energy List. Energy solution providers often have experience with the scheme and can support you in gathering the necessary documentation.
In addition, a tax advisor or accountant can help to optimally process the deduction in your return and combine it with other tax benefits.
Conclusion: RVO EIA as part of the smart energy strategy
The RVO Energy Investment Deduction is a valuable tool for entrepreneurs investing in energy conservation and sustainable energy. By making smart use of the deduction, you achieve a higher return on your investment and contribute to more sustainable business operations. Ensure you apply on time, use the correct code on the Energy List, and keep all documentation safe. Then nothing will stand in the way of a successful tax benefit.

Applying for the EIA: step-by-step plan and conditions for tax benefit
As an entrepreneur investing in energy-saving business assets, you can achieve tax benefits through the Energy Investment Allowance (EIA). Applying for the EIA can save you a significant amount of tax burden, but the process requires attention to detail and timing. In this article, we explain step-by-step how to apply for the EIA, the conditions you must meet, and what to look out for.
What exactly is the EIA?
The Energy Investment Deduction is a tax scheme that allows you to deduct a portion of your investment in energy-efficient business assets from your taxable profit. It is not a subsidy that you receive, but a deduction that reduces your taxable profit. This saves you tangible euros on your corporate income tax or personal income tax return.
The scheme applies to business assets listed on the official Energy List. This list is updated annually and includes everything from energy-efficient installations and LED lighting to business battery storage and charging infrastructure. Please note: the deduction percentage may vary from year to year; therefore, we do not state a specific percentage here. Always check the current conditions via the Netherlands Enterprise Agency (RVO).
Conditions for applying for EIA
Not every investment automatically qualifies. You must meet a number of conditions before you can apply for the EIA:
- Minimum investment per asset: Your investment must amount to at least €2.500 per asset (excluding VAT).
- Listed on the Energy List: The asset must be listed on the current Energy List maintained by the government.
- New and unused: It must concern new equipment that has not been used before.
- For your business: You must be an entrepreneur and use the business asset for your business.
- Within the application period: You have three months to submit the application, calculated from the date on which you put the asset into use or received the invoice. The earliest date counts.
That last condition is crucial. If you miss the three-month deadline, you will miss out on the tax benefit. So set a reminder in your calendar immediately after your investment.
Step by step: this is how you apply for EIA
Step 1: Check if your investment qualifies
Start by checking the Energy List on the RVO website. This list is divided into categories and contains specific technical requirements for each asset. For example, for container battery storage, performance requirements regarding storage capacity and efficiency often apply.
Pay close attention to the category and subcategory in which your investment falls. Sometimes there are additional conditions, or you may need to demonstrate certain specifications.
Step 2: Collect the correct documents
You need a number of documents for your application:
- Invoice or proof of purchase of the business asset
- Technical specifications demonstrating that it meets the requirements of the Energy List
- If applicable: certificates or test results
Keep these documents carefully. The Tax and Customs Administration may request them later with your tax return.
Step 3: Log in to RVO via eHerkenning
You submit the application digitally via the RVO portal. For this, you need eHerkenning, at least level 2+ with an authorization for RVO services. Haven't you arranged this yet? Then apply in good time, as activation can take a few days.
Log in to the RVO portal and search for the application form for the Energy Investment Deduction. The system guides you step by step through the process.
Stap 4: Vul de aanvraag in
In the form, you fill in, among other things:
- Company details and tax number
- Description of the asset and category from the Energy List
- Investment amount (excl. VAT)
- Date of commissioning or invoice date
Be precise. Errors or ambiguities may lead to delays or rejection.
Step 5: Receive your decision notice and include it in your tax return.
After submission, you will receive a decision from RVO within a few weeks. This states whether your application has been approved and the amount for which you may apply the deduction. You then include this amount in your corporate income tax or personal income tax return with the Tax and Customs Administration.
Please note: the EIA is an investment deduction, not a direct discount on your investment. You reduce your taxable profit, which ultimately means you pay less tax.
Common mistakes when applying for EIA
Experience shows that entrepreneurs regularly overlook a number of things:
- Late application: The three-month deadline is rock hard. Put it in your calendar immediately as soon as the invoice arrives.
- Choosing the wrong category: The Energy List is sometimes complex. If in doubt, contact RVO or consult an advisor.
- Incomplete documentation: Ensure your technical specifications match the requirements in the list.
- Investment under €2.500: Every investment must reach at least this amount per asset. Splitting invoices to stay below the limit does not work.
Combination with other schemes
You can often combine the EIA with other tax schemes or subsidies, such as the small-scale investment deduction (KIA) or specific innovation schemes. However, always check whether there are any grounds for exclusion for your specific situation.
Also of interest: companies that invest in energy-saving measures to apply peak shaving or that are experiencing network problems can make the business case for battery storage more attractive through the EIA.
Where can you go with questions?
Do you still have questions about the EIA or energy-saving investments such as battery storage or charging infrastructure after reading this article? Please feel free to contact us. We are happy to help you with the technical aspects of energy storage and can point out the options that suit your situation.
For substantive questions regarding the application procedure itself, you can of course also contact the RVO helpdesk directly. They know all the details of the regulations and can assist you with difficult issues.
Ready to see how Snowflake works?
Applying for the EIA is a promising way to obtain a tax benefit for energy-saving investments. However, it requires careful consideration: check in good time whether your investment is listed on the Energy List, gather the correct documents, and submit your application via the RVO portal within three months. By carefully following these steps, you will get the most out of your sustainable investments.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is a home battery profitable without energy market trading?
Yes. All J&S Energy batteries pay for themselves through increased self -consumption – even without having to trade on the energy market or imbalance markets.
📊 Calculation example:
10 kWh battery (including installation and inverter)
Annual savings: €950 (based on 2.700 kWh extra self-consumption)
Payback period: 5,5 years
Lifespan: average 6.600 cycles → ±15 years
➡️ So after the payback period, you have ±9 years of “free electricity” left.
What is the average annual yield of a 10 kWh home battery?
A 10 kWh home battery significantly increases your self-consumption of solar energy, meaning you need to purchase less electricity from the grid. Especially with a dynamic energy contract, you can save even more by smart charging and discharging.
📊 Calculation example:
You consume 4.500 kWh annually
Your solar panels generate 4.500 kWh
Without a battery you use 30% yourself → 1.350 kWh
With battery you use 80% yourself → 3.600 kWh
You pay €0,35 per kWh when purchasing
Savings:
(3.600 – 1.350) kWh = 2.250 kWh extra self-consumption
2.250 kWh × €0,35 = €787,50 savings per year
➡️ In combination with dynamic pricing, this can increase to €1.200 per year.
What is a home battery?
A home battery stores excess energy from your solar panels, so you can use it later—for example, in the evening or on cloudy days. This way, you use more of your own power and save on grid costs.
How does the collaboration with solar panels work?
Solar panels generate electricity during the day. Any unused power is stored in the battery. If you need it later, it's supplied from the battery. Dynamic pricing allows the battery to automatically charge when prices are low and discharge when prices are high.
What capacities does J&S Energy supply?
We offer systems from 5 kWh to 5 MWh — from household to industrial scale.
How many charge cycles do your batteries last?
Our batteries can handle 6500 to 11.000 charge cycles, which means a lifespan of approximately 15–30 years, depending on usage.
What is the price intensity?
Installation starts at around €3500 for a 5 kWh system, increasing depending on capacity and additional options such as emergency power and dynamic control.
Are the batteries also for companies?
Yes – our MWh systems are ideal for peak shaving, use on construction sites or during events and can operate emission-free.
Can the battery be taken on a mobile device?
Absolutely! We supply mobile energy containers suitable for applications such as emission-free construction or temporary power supply.
Are the batteries expandable?
All our systems are modular. You can easily start with a smaller capacity and scale up later.
Does the battery provide emergency power?
Not standard, but possible with a backup inverter and automatic switching system for power in the event of a mains failure.
How safe are the batteries?
Manufactured with high-quality safety technology, including overload and temperature protection, galvanic isolation, self-extinguishing housing and VDE/LFP certification.
How does the installation work?
Our certified technicians handle the complete installation, including inverter, power module, battery modules, and – if desired – emergency power switching. They also assess suitable indoor or outdoor placement.
How do I monitor my battery usage?
Our accompanying J&S Energy app allows you to monitor real-time consumption, storage, and status, and adjust settings.
What is the difference between power (kW) and capacity (kWh)?
kWh = total amount of stored energy; kW = charging/discharging rate. Both are important for your system's performance.
Is a home battery profitable?
Yes, our home batteries/energy storage systems all have a positive payback period of 4 to 5 years. This payback period is based purely on our own consumption – NOT on uncertain trading on energy markets or imbalance markets!
Can I trade on the energy market with the battery?
Yes. It's possible, but we're not dependent on it in terms of payback time! With a smart battery, you can charge at low prices and discharge at peak prices via the EPEX (day-ahead) market. This requires a dynamic contract and EMS.
Are there subsidies or VAT refunds?
Individuals: VAT refunds are possible if you are considered an entrepreneur. Businesses: Energy Investment Deduction (EIA) may be eligible. Local subsidies vary by municipality.
Which battery type is suitable?
Our batteries are all made of Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP, safe).
Can I install the battery myself?
Technically possible, but we strongly recommend having a certified specialist install it for safety and warranty reasons.
Is a battery waterproof?
Some models have IP ratings (such as IP55 or IP66), but full outdoor placement requires shelter and temperature management.
How much does my own installation cost approximately?
In the Netherlands, installation costs usually vary from a few hundred to thousands of euros extra, depending on adjustments in the meter box or wiring.
